The purpose of this guide is to help the user find birds on Andros Island and find the habitats that are ideal for certain species of birds.
This book describes in detail the best places to find approximately 150 of the most common and/or most interesting birds found on the island. It is a 'must have' for any nature lover traveling to Andros Island. The book gives tips on bird spotting, how to identify the best areas for specific types of birds, and the vegetative zones preferred by each species. The book is also full of detailed coordinates to put birders on those habitats favored by certain species. Unlike most scientific writing, this text is full of humor and is as entertaining as it is informative.

This is unlike any guide I have ever seen. The most obvious difference is that the book is FUNNY!. The "rules" for bird watching are hilarious. And the tirade about the sand flea had me in stitches. Just because this book is funny does not mean it is not a top-notch academic work. The book is helpful in three ways: (1) It tells you where to find many of the best birding hotspots on the island (specifically...down to exact gps coordinates) (2) It helps you identify specific habitats that birds favor (they break down many vegetative zones and how to identify them...then tell you what birds like those zones) (3) and it has species records and tells you the relative abundance of each species at various places on the island. Pretty cool, huh?

One small thing...it is not an identification guide. It is a guide that helps you find birds, not identify them. I highly recommend "birds of the West Indies" (Raffaele, et al ...Princeton Press) as a companion to this guide.

What a great source for bird enthusiasts!
Highly recommend to all!
One of the best Birding guide that I own; A must have if you are into birds.
Very few guide books are such a great read! I absolutely loved the preface and the rules for birding. I was laughing out loud and also nodding seriously at the insights the authors provide. As a beginning birder, I found the organization and tips in this book extremely accessible. I need to plan my trip to Andros!
Just returned from a week on Andros Island ...... with this guide in hand. It was extremely useful in guiding me to great viewing sites. The map with locations was especially helpful. Enjoyed the humorous writing. To do the island justice you definitely need a rental car!! Great book.
I can't imagine anyone better suited to write a guide to the birds of this incredible Bahamian island. Joe has spent much time over decades on this island, and is intimately acquainted with each species and where to find it. This book is an indispensable guide for anyone traveling to Andros, and helps with showcasing the incredible diversity that exists on Andros.
If you are a serious bird-watcher, you are probably aware of North Andros Island. You may even have contemplated going there. If you do, here's some advice Do not leave without this encyclopedia description of where to go, how to get there, what to expect, what to avoid, and how to find exactly the birds you want to see. Small and easy to consult in the field, A Guide to the Birds of North Andros Island is based on years of field research and shared experiences by its authors and contributors. But, if you expect to see the facts and nothing but the facts, you may be pleasantly surprised to find humor and delightful stories scattered throughout this valuable little resource.
Perfect antidote to the typical field guide, this guide truly shows the best and sometimes secret places to find and enjoy all the bird species that are just visiting or call Andros home. It is comprehensive, well written, witty and entertaining. As a birder who at one time made yearly pilgrimages to Andros, I can honestly say, "listen to these guys". They shine on their love for the island and the book is full of important insider information. If you're planning a trip to Andros for the undisturbed beauty and the birds, buy this book early in your trip planning and take it along right next to your boring old field guide.
