In this second book in the Will Fain, U.S. Marshal, series, Will finds a hidden Spanish treasure on his property. He and Isum Wood, his chief deputy, search out murderers and rapists in wild Texas frontier towns like San Saba, Lampasas, Gatesville and Comanche. They kill two murdering gamblers in Buffalo Gap, go on to the wildest of western towns, Fort Griffin, where Will's great thoroughbred stallion, Traveler, wins a stakes race, and then Will and Isum fight off a gang which wants to steal the race money. It's a great story of adventure on the west Texas frontier, but also a heartfelt relationship with wife Virginia, and two children, Jacob and Annabelle, that warms Will's heart and keeps him grounded. When a crew of buffalo hunters strike Will's ranch, he and Isum use the Gatling gun to fight them off and restore peace to the ranch.

This to the author; if Virginia had a family, as well as four sisters that could provide comfort and support, why did she stay on at her little run down hut after her husband was killed? Just didn't make sense. Also, dang this is a very financially rich family for west Texas times. Just a little too unreal. You can do better or should do better. Will is The Law in west Texas. He fights murderers and rapists. When his family is threatened, his wife is the first to act. R. O. Lane keeps the action moving and will keep you turning the pages.
Have read the 4 books of Fain U.S Marshall all have been exciting from page 1 to the end. His books are very entertaining and once you start difficult to stop because you want to know what's happening.. Will continue to read books by RO Lane. Great writer
I have found a new best author. If the rest of the Will Fain books are as good as this I may not mow my lawn for the rest of the summer. You cowboys and girls will surely let chores lie once you start this story. So, "Giddy Up.""
Really liked this novel. RO Lane takes on racism and Jim Crow laws in Texas. Will Fain's deputy Isum Wood becomes his deputy and gets to be more than just a sidekick. I liked the authors treatment of the side characters. I will read more of this series.
I have now read the 1st two books in this series and I have enjoyed them both. I am glad I bought the 1st four books in this series and plan to enjoy them in order. I like the way the author has developed the U.S. Marshall Will Fain character through the these first two books. I read a lot of western novels and I know I will continue to enjoy this character and the events he faces.
This is about a man who will go to almost any lengths to see that his family is safe. He follows a lifestyle that few other men would follow he treats women with total respect and will not let others misstreat a woman because of where she is in her life.
In R O Lane's Will Fain is fair to all people no matter their faith, color, station in life or age.
More beauty is found in the fact that I would feel free to give any one of the Will Fain books to any age of reader (male or female) and know that they are getting a book that will truly Bless them.
