The time of crisis is now…

With a popular, re-elected President now dying in hospital, it seems inevitable that the Vice President, Carlyn Foreman, will take office.

Yet Foreman is both unelected and unpopular.

Some say he and his cronies are almost communist – Russian sympathisers, perhaps?

Almost everybody around him believes him to be a repellent human being and fundamentally unfit for office.

But can Foreman be stopped and should he be stopped?

In the aftermath of the Vietnam War, few Americans have an appetite for conflict, but there is an exception The Destruction Committee.

Forged in the theatre of war, the Destruction Committee comprises top-grade soldiers, men who know how to kill quickly, efficiently, ruthlessly and without being caught.

Operating well outside the law, the Destruction Committee nonetheless declares itself dedicated to the greater good and minimal damage.

When it comes to those it deems a threat to society, however, The Destruction Committee kills without mercy.

And The Destruction Committee believes that Carlyn Foreman is a threat.

The Destruction Committee is a classic thriller that touches upon the nature of American politics, the psychological effects of war and death, and the allocation of political power.

This turned out to be a more interesting read than I initially thought it would be. I was familiar with this author from another book of his I read.
The book was not without a drawback, however, and that could be that it was first published in 1971.
As I was reading it appeared to me that the narrative was dated. For example, needing a dime to make a phone call vs. that of using a cell phone? Well it could be that cell phones were not in vogue in 1971 (never mind in existence), which when taken in context with the story line made for some awkward moments when decisions were needed to be made about what to do and when, particularly when a phone booth was not available.
I don’t retell story lines in my reviews, but suffice it to say the plot was well laid out. It kept me interested to know what was going on to the last page. Rising action was the book’s strong suit. Falling action not so much. I didn’t get much out of character development, although the main antagonist politico was entirely unrealistic in his views in my opinion.
I’ll let those reviewers who must summarize the story tell it, since I’ve never thought I could do it well enough, let alone better than the author.
The book was a decent read and can easily recommend it, albeit for the publishing time frame and for some of the absurd sub plots and how they played out. Just one note on spelling: We say "curb". I don't know where "kerb" came from.

I enjoyed reading this book. The concept was interesting, although a little far fetched
This was a different premise although it's another version of Robin Hood. Destroy the bad for the good of the people. There is enough evil in the world to choose from, but an assassin is still an assassin.
I liked the book it was believable. Not much character development but some. This is a good stand alone book, I was getting tires of books with the same characters, sometimes I need conclusions, this book filled the bill.
Using their skills from VietNam days, a group of six make a game of vigilante destruction. In the end, the group decides to influence a presidential election. The candidate gets to reflect on his platform and reconsider his relationship to other leaders.
This all seemed a little far fetched to me that loyal, former military would embark on such a course. Almost sounded like one of the South American coups that we hear about all the time. It was easy reading, but overall, I wasn't impressed.
I gave this book 3 stars because the story was good and relevant today. However, this was first published in 1971 and you can tell! When I purchase d the book it said it was released in 2017. It was not updated at all. It should have been mentioned that all of the story is set in the seventies. No cell phones or relative costs of rent, etc that is part of the narrative. I enjoyed the story, but felt tricked into expecting a book published in 2017.
Written and published well over twenty years ago this book is slightly dated. It's most noticeable in the areas of technology such as the absence of ubiquitous cell phones and other advances made over the intervening years. The quality of the story makes that fact almost irrelevant. Even the British English spellings don't detract from the compelling storyline.

This was my first Coughlin book but it will definitely not be my last!
